My Old School
Posted on August 19, 2005 by MauveBib
Crack out your flairs (or should that be flares), and put on your chest wigs, because it's Retro day! I want y'all playing the oldest mods you can find. Go hunt through the cdrom.com mirrors and find some really crappy old magical/RPG mod, and play it all day. Nah, just kidding, there were some fantastic mods back in the day, and today is about celebrating that. Let us honour the past by playing the mods of our forebearers.
Anyway, on with the updates! Firstly, LordHavoc obviously heeded my warning yesterday, because he's got his booth up and running. For those of you who live under a rock, LordHavoc is the author of DarkPlaces, one of the most sophisticated free engines available, and you really should check it out. He spent 6 hours just working on the changelog, so you really should go apreciate his effort.
FrikaC has added a patch for his speedmod, Battle of Wits, over in his booth. It make the mod even more funerer, so go grab it before I insult yo mamma!
CheapAlert has outdone himself on the retro front, with a whole bucket full of old mods. Check out his page for some old gems. Not that you can sell them to jewelers or anything. They're not really gems, it's just a metaphor. I can be so pedantic sometimes.
You know, I might release something today. Calm down, it's not the big one, that's coming tommorow if I can just get it finished. But I have something a little retro I should really release. More info later...
To celebrate Retro day, I'm encouraging as many of you as possible to hit Echon's servers and play Gloom! I'll also be trying to organise an AirQuake game, but no guarantees at this point....

Okey dokey folkey, it's time for another of my patented brand of updates. First up I have the results of the recent speedmodding contest. Please put your hands together for FrikaC and SantaClaws, who both made great mods on the theme of 'Turns/rounds'. A big thanks to both of you guys, and the rest of y'all can find their handiwork over in the Speedmodding booth.
Next up with have CheapAlert's mod, Charlie. It's a gory classic Quake mod, with loads of cool weapons and effects, not to mention a smattering of gargoyles... you can find alpha version 0.4 over in Cheapy's SUPER booth Second Edition.
As for single player maps day, well head over to Hrimfaxi's booth and you'll find "The Rest Is Silence", a map originally intended to be part of the Lost Chapters collection. It looks hotter than a hot thing on a hot day.
CocoT, the spirit of Qexpo's past, has released a new version of Ultimate Quad Capture over in his booth. Qexpo just isn't right without a new version of UQC, and so now it is complete. I could shut the site now a happy man. I won't though, because I'd probably get lynched. Seriously though, this marks CocoT's re-retirement from the modding community, and I for one would like to thank him for all the hard work he's put in over the years. He's a true founding father of Qexpo, and I'm sure we'll all miss him.
In happier news, Entar has released a new version of his Vengenace R2 engine over in his booth. Two new versions during the Qexpo? Madness I tell you! I've not even managed one release yet! Go check it out and make everyone's day a little happier.
Project Twilight has twinkled it's way into the Qexpo, and into our hearts. It's a Quake 1 engine project that's well worth a download, which I shall be doing very soonish. Just as soon as I get these darned handcuffs off. I'm typing this with my nose you know...
A big welcome please, for TF2003, which as the name suggests is an updated version of TF. To the few remaining booths which aren't brimming with content yet, remember you only have a couple of days left or you'll be imortalised in "Content coming soon, honest!" mode. Anyway, back to TF2003, which looks spiffy. It even has bunnyhopping bots, which has to be worth seeing.
I think that's just about your lot for tonight. Tommorow is Retro Day, so I want to see you all sporting mullets and wearing shell suits. Oh wait, you do already.
On Your Own...
Posted on August 18, 2005 by MauveBib
So it's Single Player Maps day, and the end of Qexpo is rapidly rushing up on us. Please, no tears, because we still have a few days of funk remaining. Today should hopefully see the release of some of the much anticipated maps in the booths, so I'm shivering with anticip...........ation.
I just recieved an email which made me go all gooey eyed, so I'll post it here in its entirety:
From: quiet_kaos
Hi MauveBib,
You've done a great job with this project, THANK YOU
for persevering! This is the first QXpo I've seen and
I'm kinda surprised at the amount and quality of
projects still brewing for this 'old' game. I'm beside
myself, anxiously awaiting what the next day will
bring.
I've only looked at a screenshot of one of the earlier
expos, but the current site is slick and nicer on the
eyes. Sometimes I wish some icon would appear by the
names in the booth list to indicate recent updates,
but then I wouldn't be able to plough through it all
over again!
My thanks to all involved along with you..
It's things like this that make the whole thing worthwhile. Why haven't I recieved more fanmail, eh? Todays event is Speedmailing, where you all write nice things and mail them to me.
Not really, today's event is Quake 2 Speed Mapping. I'm not sure how well this'll go, as I've not seen many Quake 2 mappers around the Qexpo, but hey ho. If anyone wants to enter, the details will shortly be in the Events booth...
On the updates front, OmegaPhlare has posted a review of FrikaC's Arcade over in his booth. Go check it out if you like coins, sticky floors and RSI.
A big thank-you to everyone who made a comic yesterday, I had a lot of fun reading them. I'm not going to link to them individually, so you'll have to visit every booth to find out which have comics :p Also, the speedmodelling pack will be coming very soon, just as soon as I've collected the rest of the results in.

To paraphrase Marie Antoinette, "Let them eat Qake!". Yes, FrikaC has released a beta of his awesome Qake game over in his booth. Imagine DJQuake was real, and you're half way there.... Seriously, go grab! Then miss and grab a stinging nettle instead, and spend a week with some mildly sore spots on your hand. Then.. (At this point MauveBib is dragged off to the Asylum by the nice men in white coats. Damn HL Scientists.)
Two Warsow updates in a week? We are lucky indeed! Head over to Solomonk's booth for the latest in cel shaded fragging. You know, I spoil you too much. One day I'll spoil you so much you'll go mouldy and I'll have to throw you out.

We must all give a nice welcome to Qexpo to the BasketQuake booth. This is unsurprisingly a basketball mod! Shock, horror! It's QW based and looks nifty, so be sure to check it out!
Also, please give a round of applause to Bram's booth for arriving on the scene. It contains some nifty hi-res Quake menu replacement textures, so go grab 'em now!
Over in Preach's booth he's released v1.1 of his player models pack, and that's gotta be a good thing. Loads of fixes, TGA skins, skeleton etc etc are all included, so go knock yourself out. Then catch your head on the corner of the table as you fall and bleed slowly to death. Ahhh.
QuakeMatt has released version 1.1 of his prize-winning Reinforcer mod. Go check it out in his stronghold, if you like enforcers, monkeys and Quake. Actually I made up one of those. There's no such thing as Quake.
Commie Day
Posted on August 17, 2005 by MauveBib
Hooray! It's commie day and y'all will be bending to my will for the good of the community! All the ducks are going to Moscow! Wait, what's that? It's Comic day you say? Well that's no fun at all!
Yes indeedy folks, it's Comic day. I want y'all to enter the speedcomicing contest, which consists of making a vaguely Quake or Quake 2 related comic and slapping it up in your booth. Everyone who enters wins my undying appreciation. Today is of course inspired by the genius of DJQUAKE, so let it inspire you to create great works of art, preferably with 2 shades of brown.
Turnbased Cows in Space
Posted on August 16, 2005 by MauveBib
So there's another q1 speedmodding contest going on right now. Due to popular demand Harbish is hosting another one over in the Speedmodding booth. The theme is "turns and rounds", so go and stake your claim on the prize! Yes, there is a prize! It's an air pie with no crust.
Cheapalert has stuck a very messy game trailer up in his booth. It's gory and fullbright, so be warned!

Today is Game Art Day, the day dedicated to all the pretty stuff that fills your game; model, textures, sounds etc. This has often been a forgotten art in Quake and Quake 2 modding, but is a hugely important one. Today is a chance for all you budding artists to spread your creative wings and make something pretty. Or something hideous from the netherhells, whichever.
Randy has made a great start over in his booth. He's released a fantastic new Shambler replacement model, complete with gloss and normal maps. It looks hella scary ingame, so go check it out now! Seriously, this is very cool.
Over in the Holocaust booth, they've stuck up the video after which the booth is named. It's a QW video showing off frags, skills, bores, quad runs, tricks and more. Go check it out now, you'd be a numpty not to!
Over in Kaz's Nex Shag Shack (I laugh everytime I read that), Kaz has release his NEXDM01 remake for Nexuiz. Any self respecting Nex fan will know how good Kaz's work is, so will be checking it out immediately.
Error has released his Dwarf mod over in his booth. All I know is that it involves tree climbing, and is for DarkPlaces...
I forgot to link to this a few days ago, but the speedmapping pack from earlier in the Qexpo has been released! Head over to the booth in question to grab Emerald City speedmaps by Entar, neg!ke, Preach and Zwiffle. There'll be another contest on the closing day of qexpo.
As today is Game Art Day, the event being run today is Speed Modelling. You have 24 hours to remake any model from Quake 1 or 2. This contest allows for people of all skills to have a go - anyone can remake a grenade! Check out the Events Booth for more details.
Oh, and the editorial from yesterday never made it into fruition. I'll hopefully write it today if I find the time in my hectic schedule!
War Has Never Been Sow Fun
Posted on August 15, 2005 by MauveBib
SoLomoNK has informed me that there's a new version of Warsow available. This sweet standalone DM game is well worth checking out, so head over to his booth for the latest version. It is multiplayer mods day after all!
Stay tuned for the editorial and the Nexuiz game...
MultiPass
Posted on August 15, 2005 by MauveBib
So today is the day of multiplayer madness, the day of the latest multiplayer mods. Dig out your Nexuiz, Alien Arena, Digital Paintball 2 and all the others, because it's time for a frag fest. No mercy, no escape, no excuses.
Speaking of Digital Paintball 2, they have a fantastic competition going on. You could win your very own Digital Paintball 2 T-shirt. They also have some screenies from a recent lan party, showing of 'pong mode'. Go see for yourself, I'm not making it up.
I think I'll write another editorial later, considering that the last one went down quite well.

Okey dokey folkies, we got a coop mod to play, cunningly called CoopMod! QuakeMatt has released it over in his booth, and I urge you to check it out. It's a sort of 'defend the base from the monsters' time game, and looks a lot of fun.
Tei has outdone himself once again. The crazy spaniard has released a tutorial for adding heightmap support to your quake engine. This is seriously spiffy, and I want as many engines as possible to get this ASAP! Grab it here.
The prydon gate game will be happening very soon, so swing by the chatroom now!
We Have Ways Of Making You Cooperate
Posted on August 14, 2005 by MauveBib
So it's Coop day, and I'm glad. I've always felt coop is the forgotten game style. What could be more fun than blowing up zombies or strogg with your friends? Everyone enjoys it when they play it, but they don't play often enough. Today you shall.
So, on to the updates... Echon has updated the EGL booth with a shiny new version for y'all to try out. It's version 0.1.9, and there are also a couple of funky new conbacks for y'all to play with.
Inertia has released a new map over in his booth. It's tentatively called slipstream, and is not yet quite finished, though he's releasing it for us anyway. Isn't that nice of him!
OmegaPhlare has a pretty spiffy review of Ajay's Lunkin's Journey over in his booth. Go check it out, but don't get attacked by invincible dogs along the way!
Over in the OpenQuartz booth there's a request for a modeller. They'd like someone to model an Ogre replacement for their GPL game, and I think people should help them out. OpenQuartz is a great project and I wanna see it progressing, so go help!
As today is Coop day, we will be running a big Prydon Gate game. I want as many people as possible involved. I'm not sure what time it'll start, so hang in the Chat Room to find out.
And The Result Is In...
Posted on August 13, 2005 by MauveBib
The first ever Qexpo Alien Arena Tourney went off with only a few minor glitches, and a good time was had by all!
There were some close games, but in the end, it was Whitelipper winning in convincing fashion, taking all 3 FFA rounds as well as the Bot Slaughter round.
The prizewinners were:
Whitelipper: 163 frags
Roadrage: 107 frags
Ghostface: 100 frags
Thanks to everyone who took part in this event!
Visit the Alien Arena tourney booth for full results, stats, and a recorded demo.

As promised, there's a rant on the editorials page. Some of you might have read it before from when I posted it at Moddb, but I still think it makes good reading.
Multiplayer Maps Day
Posted on August 13, 2005 by MauveBib
So crazily today is multiplayer maps day, the crazy day of online crazyness. That's crazy! I want y'all to be playing as much online gaming today as you can, till you're fit to burst. Then play some more.
The DarkMaster booth is up and running, with some great shots of the upcoming quake prequel. He hopes that his netplay test will be released during Qexpo, and he has the hottest booth babe on the planet.
Over in frag.machine's booth you'll find a whole orgy's worth of screenshots for his one-day-probably-upcoming RPG mod, Realms of Quake. They made me happy anyway.
OmegaPhlare has expanded on the reviews in his booth. He's also got the beginings of a Lunkin's Journey review...
Also today, we have not one but two big events. First up is the CodeRED: Alien Arena Tournament, which begins at 2pm GMT if my conversion tables are right... There's actually a prize for this one, so it's gotta be worth checking out! Find out the details here.
The other event is the first of the Quake Speed Mapping contests. The theme is 'The Emerald City', and a lot more information can be found here
I think I'll slap up an editorial later in the day...
Domino Dark...
Posted on August 12, 2005 by MauveBib
Just before I head to sleeples, there is one big update to be mentioned...
Urre has released his UrreBot over in his booth. Don't let the lack of a booth design put you off, this is a great project. I know just how hard Urre's been working on this, and it's a great achievement. The bots navigate using wayboxes rather than waypoints, which means they don't need to do any tracing for their movement. Go check 'em out, honestly!
Apologies Shmapologies
Posted on August 12, 2005 by MauveBib
I must apologise for my lack of updates today. Unfortunately I've been busy coding all day, a neccesity if I'm ever to get my mod finished before the end of Qexpo.
A few tasty updates today. Since it's engine day, I'll start with Entar's Quake engine, Vengence R2. There's a new release, version 2.1.2. That's a lot of full stops (or periods for our yankee friends). Find it over in his booth. It's a sweet engine, and your mission for today is to try new engines, so go go go!. It has a brand new scriptable particle system, which I've had a look at and am very impressed with! He also has one of the weirdest comics you'll ever see...
Speaking of particle systems, KrimZon has released one in his booth. I've not had a chance to check out this one yet, but given KrimZon's fantastic previous work it can only be great.
Next up we have the results of yesterday's 24 hour Quake speedmodding event. There were 3 entries, which can be found in a nice pack in the speedmodding booth. The 3 entrants were CheapAlert, PuD and LardArse. There are some sweet speedmods there. I know which is my favourite, what's yours?
CocoT, that legend of Qexpos past, has released a funky video of a hidden mode in his ULTIMATE QUAD CAPTURE mod. It's mega cool, and well worth a look.
And since I'm running this site I can pimp my own stuff as much as I want. There's a new screenshot in the Electronic Liberation Front booth.
Keep The Engine Running
Posted on August 12, 2005 by MauveBib
There are a plethora of different engines out there for both quake 1 and quake 2. Shamefully, many of us haven't tried most of them. Far too many of us just pick an engine that we like and use it forever more. Today is about changing that. Today I'd like you to try out all the engines you can, from the simplest to the most complex. Who knows, maybe you'll be surprised!
Some booth news now... Sajt has released some hillarious new models over in his booth. Go check 'em out, they're simply wonderful.
The EGL booth brings news of 4 new addons for the classic mod Gloom. Judging by the screenshots they mean replacement models, and they look great. Anyone who plays Gloom should head over there right now, or they're missing out!
Over in the Travail booth you'll find a shiny new map to download. To quote from the booth, 'disqdm1 is a 4v4 Quake deathmatch level based on the QSP level "QTfin1: hacia la fuente" from the upcoming Quake mission "Travail"'. I'll be checking this out just as soon as I finish my breakfast. You should too!
The 24 hour Speedmod contest finishes at 1pm GMT today, so make sure you're done in time, and upload your submissions. Check the events page for more details.
Base In The Place, Qexpo
Posted on August 11, 2005 by MauveBib
Over in Morkai's booth, you'll find an excellent resource for any qc coder. It's his own code base, designed to be cleaner than id's, but more complete than the scratch tutorials. If it's up to scratch (excuse pun), I might well be using this in future myself.
And So The Journey Ends...
Posted on August 11, 2005 by MauveBib
It gives me great pleasure to announce the release of Lunkin's Journey over in Ajay's booth. This massive 3rd person adventure game has been in production for literally years, and should be worth the wait. I'm going to download it right now, and so should you!
Teach me!
Posted on August 11, 2005 by MauveBib
Dr Shadowborg has once again blessed us with another QC tutorial, this time on adding new firing keys. Go check it out in his booth.
Insert Coin To Continue
Posted on August 11, 2005 by MauveBib
W00t, we got a nice big release! FrikaC has released his Arcade mod over in his booth. It's a great
compilation of many arcade classics, some of which he has released seperately before. Careful though, some of the games are fiendishly addictive!
Speedy Gonzales
Posted on August 11, 2005 by MauveBib
Okey doke folk, the Quake 1 24 hour speed modding event is starting nowish over in the Event Booth. It's a good 'un, so pile in and read away. I want to see as many entries as humanly possible. Heck, even non humans can enter if they want.
Day 2 In The Qexpo House
Posted on August 11, 2005 by MauveBib
Welcome back folkles. This is day 2 - Single Player Mods Day. That means I want y'all playing as many single player mods as possible today. I know that doesn't
sound very sociable, but it's fun :D Check out the Event Booth for details of today's event -
Quake 1 Speed Modding. Anyway, on with the news!
Sajt's booth is now open for business, with some pretty pictures to show... Hammy Bob's booth is also open, and also has a pretty picture...
Over in Kaz's Nex Shag Shack there are some nice goodies available for any Nexuiz player.
There is a map pack and a model pack, plus shots of a cool NEXDM01 CTF remake he has in the works...
The Nosferatu booth is now open for business, and has some spiffing screenies. Make sure you don't get bitten while you're there though...
OmegaPhlare has been working hard over in his booth, and he's reviewed a couple of mods for us. Head over there and check out his reviews of The Ascension of Vigil and The Hunted Chronicle 1. My favourite line: "This cool guy looks like he hasn't shaved in over a week.". True genius.
PuD is running a server for the classic quake mod Slide. More info here.
More to come later folkies, and don't forget to be at the Events Booth at 1pm GMT for the start of the Quake SpeedMod.
More The Merrier
Posted on August 10, 2005 by MauveBib
Still day one, and I got more news for ya.
The 4.02 patch for CodeRED: Alien Arena is now released and available for downloading! Find it here
My booth is now open, The Electronic Liberation Front. Kinda funny that I spent so much time setting up the site, that I forgot to make my own booth till now...
RenegadeC's booth is now open. It's dedicated to his 2d beat-em-up mod, The Ascension Of Vigil. This is a personal favourite of mine, so go check it out.
There is a game trailer for download in Ajay's booth. It's a trailer for his long-awaited upcoming game, Lunkin's Journey. I'm gonna check it out, and so should you!
Sticking with our game trailers theme, there's another one to be found in The Hunted booth. It's an early video of the upcoming Chronicle 3 of The Hunted, a fantastic standalone zombie series. If the previous games are anything to go by, this one should be awesome.
There are a couple of maps for download in Daemon's booth. Go get 'em!
There are another couple of maps in Drako's booth, this time of the trickjumping variety. Check 'em out and see if you can pull off the tricks.
Bored of Quake Guy? Want a new look to your deathmatch? Well, Preach has the solution for you. He's released a pack of player models over in his booth. It's a great resource, so dive in!
A few booth babes have been popping up, but FTE's takes the purple, homing biscuit.
More soon folks...
Initial Releases
Posted on August 10, 2005 by MauveBib

The KMQUAKE II engine has just had a new version 0.19 released. It has some funky new features like light blooms, so go check it out!
Randy has released a set of some Quake replacement textures over in his booth. They
include gloss and normal maps too. Good luck solving the riddle to find the download!
Trinca has released a version of the classic frogbot with builtin waypoints for 350 top maps. Check out this fantastic achievment!
Dr Shadowborg has provided us with a tasty QC tutorial showing an advanced way to add new weapons. Check it out in the Launchbase Productions booth, along with some other goodies.
Wazat has released a plethora of Nexuiz goodies over in his booth. Firstly there's his gamemodes patch, which adds several new gamemodes like CTF andDomination. There is also a new level pack for download there. Go get 'em tiger!
If you have any news you want posted, either mail me or catch me on IRC or the forums.
Open For Business
Posted on August 10, 2005 by MauveBib
The day is upon us once again. We stand as the real-guard of a generation, the upholders of history, defenders of the faith.
We aim to prove that there's life in the old dog yet, and that you can teach him new tricks.
This is a celebration of Quake and Quake 2. These are games with a glorious past, and with our help, a glorious future.
Often people laugh at these games, labelling them as part of the past, forgotten to all but the most foolish. They couldn't be more
wrong.
Quake and Quake 2 have an advantage over many modern games, in that the engine source codes are released, and
available free to all. This allows a degree of development unmatched in any other games. Today, Quake and Quake 2 are
unrecognisable compared to when they were released. We, as a community, have done this; brought life to the dying and
had a lot of fun along the way. Qexpo aims to prove wrong the doubters. We believe in Quake and Quake2, and we hope
that by showcasing the latest in development for these games, we can show the world that we still stand.
This is the third biannual Qexpo, and the first to include Quake 2. In the past there has been division, in the future there shall
be unity. Together we can be far stronger than we are alone. As we speak QuakeCon is happening, and Quake 4 is being unveiled
to the world. Qexpo is our QuakeCon, our unveiling to the world.
So wipe your feet and watch the step. Come inside for eleven days of fun. Not all the booths are open yet, and many will change
greatly over the next few days.
Welcome, one and all, to Qexpo 2005.

Qexpo Site Opens!
Posted on July 16, 2005 by MauveBib
Welcome, one and all, to the site of the 2005 Quake Expo! For those who don't know what
Qexpo is about, check out the FAQ page. Heck, you should check it
out even if you do know what this is all about :)
This year's Qexpo will take place from the 10th to the 20th of August, and will be an online expo
for Quake 1 and Quake 2. If you are a modder, a mapper or even just a player of either of these
two games, and you'd like to get involved, then you will be able to! The booth signups will be
available very soon, so get preparing.
Hope to see you all at the Qexpo, and keep checking back on this page for the booth signups.
Tell all your friends too! Until then, why not join us in the official Qexpo chatroom, #qexpo on irc.anynet.org.
Also, come chat on the Official Qexpo Forum, where you can leave any questions, ideas or general chatter.
Cheers,
